Queen Beez Motorcycle Club
from Richmond Times-Dispatch's, glossy annual magazine, Discover Richmond, August 9, 2006 by Cesca Janece Waterfield Forget the stereotype of the tough biker rebelling against society. These riders are queens and their social consciences have muscle. According to their Website, the Queen Beez Motorcycle Social Association (QBMSA) is the first female sport bike club chartered in Richmond and the Commonwealth’s first club of its kind headed by minorities. Their events celebrate sisterhood and fun, but always are designed to improve the lives of others. Founded by Richmond native Rhonda Hertz, QBMSA has committed its fundraising efforts to several charities including an area domestic abuse shelter, HIV prevention programs, and breast cancer foundations. Hertz advises, “Depending on the urgency or need we recognize, we also support others. But we will always work with those we’re committed to.” Hertz, mother of two, has been riding for nearly seven years and established QBMSA in 2003 with five original members. Her motivation to ride with other women inspired her, but from the outset, she wanted to match the group with charities. Today, QBMSA comprises two divisions; one for active motorcycle riders and one for those who prefer to show their enthusiasm from the roadside. But appreciation from afar often turns to a passion for climbing aboard one of these rockets and riding in the open air. “We have members who began in the Social Division because they didn’t ride,” Hertz explains, her voice opening into a smile. “But after awhile, they wanted to try it.” One such adventurer is Hertz’s twelve-year-old daughter. Does that maker her a Princess Bee? Community-minded, geared up to move… That’s royalty on any road. Back |
