Recording Studio FAQ

Tell me about The Mastering Lab!

Why should I master?

Mastering is the process by which your songs truly become an "album." It demands a different collection of creative and technical skills.

Our engineers are trained in music and the techniques of great mastering. In addition to knowing their way around the finest and most cutting-edge equipment and software, their ears are very, very keen. And don't underestimate the importance of "fresh" ears. After rehearsing, playing, recording, and mixing, you can't beat a fresh perspective bolstered by the technical savvy of a true mastering engineer.

But I already have a great mix...

Mixing is important, obviously. But proper mastering can correct problems missed in the mixing. And believe it or not, mixing often creates problems!

How will mastering affect my recording?

Some of the tasks mastering involves are ensuring that relative levels between your songs make sense and are what you intended. The quiet songs are quiet, the rockers rock, but alongside one another, they stand as a unified product. ...Broadband and multi-band compression, limiting, removing distortion, finding noise and eliminating it, bringing out facets of the mix, or conversely, "downplaying" some aspects of the mix… These are a few of the solutions brought to you by a capable mastering engineer.

What is turnaround?

Give us a week and you will get a recording ready for the big leagues.
