Band Bio Sample

ContraStance's musicianship and iconoclastic songwriting are earning them a reputation as one of the most promising and original bands to emerge recently. Their sound and image appeal to a wide and growing audience of "repeat offenders."

ContraStance resolutely commands the provinces of jazz fusion and progressive rock as they deftly venture beyond the borders of both. While stages and studios are littered with performers of bare proficiency, ContraStance's technical prowess is singular, and often astonishing, yet never alienates the listener.

At ContraStance's inception two years ago, members Dave Dierks, Ian Cowardin, Tanner Hayden and Judah Roydes acknowledged their shared commitment to originating music true to themselves, beyond tides and trends or whims of the multitude. Ironically, in rejecting temptation to create less-challenging music, ContraStance attracts large and varied audiences who clearly value the authenticity of their music and the startling power of their live shows. Writing songs and in improv, ContraStance shows a fervent chemistry. It may be surprising that they come from such different musical backgrounds and life experiences. Yet some fundamental commonalities and commitments transcend what other bands would stumble over.

One afternoon sitting around Crimson Claw Studios in Revere, Massacusetts, the band discovered they all were familiar with and loyal to the same credo, "Music is best," one of Frank Zappa's countless zany assertions that seems to speak to some kind of universal truth. Perhaps it is also true that music knows best, because this band, both personally and as a unit, has overcome formidable obstacles and challenges. Anyone who isn't familiar with ContraStance's drive and dedication would attribute their meeting as destiny.

Anyone who is, wouldn't dare.
